Following the order given to the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) by the state governor, Engr. Dave Umahi to conduct Council elections in the state, the Commission has officially announced Saturday, August 15, 2020 as the date for the elections.

The Chairman of EBSIEC, Barr. Josy Eze, made this known in a meeting held with the officials of all the political parties and security agencies at Ebonyi State Traditional Council Hall, Onwe Road, Abakaliki, the state capital.

The Chairman stressed that the elections supposed to be held on April 25, 2020 but was suspended for some months as the deadly virus kept spreading in the state and country at large.

He however, maintained that the election would be held this time on 15th August since the government of Federation had lifted ban on electoral activities in the country and the Commission had met with the stakeholders alongside the party chieftains in the state.

The EBSIEC Chairman further noted that the elections would hold in all the 13 local government areas and 171 wards in the state.

He therefore, urged all the registered political parties that met the requirements for the council polls to feel free by carrying out their campaign activities and making sure they keep the COVID-19 protocol, adding that the elections would be Free, Fair and Credible as demanded by the representatives of the different political parties in the meeting.

It would be recalled that Governor Umahi had over the weekend announced the lifting of ban on political activities and council elections in the state, which was earlier suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown.

Governor Umahi had also during the period of the suspension of the elections, appointed Caretaker Committee Chairmen to replace the former chairmen in the 13 local government areas of the state, pending when elections would be held.
