Group Rescues A Homeless Ebonyi Woman Begging For Alms In Lagos

Sons and daughters of Amaizu, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, who are residing in Lagos, through their group known as Amaizu Progressive Union (APU) Lagos Branch have rescued one Mrs. Oyire Egwu Okocha, an indigene of Afikpo North LGA, who was seen in a viral video clip asking for alms in Lagos.

AJM NEWS gathered that the Amaizu Progressive Union embarked on the rescue mission when the beggar, Mrs. Oyire Egwu identified herself as an indigene of Afikpo, precisely from Amaizu as she was being interviewed in the video clip.

The APU who seriously searched for the woman in Lagos and later succeeded in getting her, arranged and brought her to Ebonyi, provided clothes for her and her children and also lodged them in a hotel in Afikpo for six days.

AJM NEWS was also rightly informed by the Coordinator of the Rescue Team of Amaizu Progressive Union, Mrs. Uzoma Agha, that the Union was planning on rehabilitating the rescued woman, Oyire Egwu before the Ebonyi State Government through the Caretaker Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area stepped into the matter.

Meanwhile, the APU has officially handed over the woman to Hon. Amauche Otunta, the Caretaker Chairman, Afikpo North LGA.

When AJM NEWS Correspondent spoke with the rescued woman, Mrs. Oyire Egwu; she expressed her gratitude towards the Amaizu Progressive Union, the Ebonyi State Government and the Caretaker Chairman of Afikpo North LGA, Hon. Amauche Otutnta and the general public for the kind gesture shown to her and her children.

She extended her thanks to her family and Amaizu community for the way she was honoured and welcomed.

Mrs. Egwu also said she was ready to accept any job and assistance offered to her, just to enable her meet her needs and take proper care of her three children who are with her now in Afikpo, as she also pleaded with those concerned to fulfill all the promises made to her.

Below Is The Speech Presented On Behalf Of The Amaizu Progressive Union (APU), By Mrs. Uzoma Agha, Coordinator of The Rescue Team Of Amaizu Progressive Union During The Hand Over Of Mrs. Oyire Egwu Okocha, The Lady Who Was Found Begging For Alms And Homeless In Lagos, On Tuesday, 11/08/2020.

“We have now come to the end of our own part of this Oyire saga. The Amaizu Progressive Union, Lagos Branch, under the coordination of the Chairman, Mr. Raphael Ogbonna Okpani and Mrs. Nnenna Okoronkwo, the President of the Women’s wing, together worked tirelessly to rescue Oyire Egwu Okocha from the slums of Lagos, where she was begging on the street.

“The efforts of Mr. Mike Chukwu, Mr. Dom Okoronkwo, Mr. Aloysius Agha, Mr. Eko Austin, Mr. Aloy ldam and a host of others too numerous to mention are very well appreciated. All of the members of the APU Lagos branch put heads together on how to rehabilitate the said lady. Mr. Urom Enya was sent by the Union to go and pick her up. A job he did perfectly well.

“The union was ready to ensure that the woman is properly taken care of. The Ebonyi State Government through the Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area came into the matter. The Chairman of Afikpo North LGA saw it as her personal duty to take care of the woman.

“APU Lagos branch have done their best. I was made the Coordinator of the team of the Rescue Mission. With the support of all concerned we did a great job. The Union accommodated her for six days in a hotel in Ehugbo. To God be the Glory she has been handed over to the representatives of the LGA who have promised to give her accommodation and a job.

“We do hope the Ebonyi state Government will continue from where Amaizu Progressive Union Lagos branch stopped. Kudos to Amaizu Progressive Union for your show of love. The entire Ehugbo community salutes you. Long Live APU Lagos branch”
