COURT BEGINS TRIAL OF NNAMDI KANU IN ABSENTIA

A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, is set to commence the trial of leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, today.

A source said five prosecution witnesses have been lined up to testify against Kanu in trial that was halted by his disappearance after an alleged invasion of his home in Afara-Ukwu, Umuahia South L.G.A of Abia State during military’s Operation Python Dance II.

Reports quote Kanu’s lawyer, Ifeanyi Ejiofor, as being aware of the trial scheduled for today, through a hearing notice served on him.

But observers express worry over how smooth or seamless today’s proceedings would go in Kanu’a absence, given the nitty-gritty of trial in absentia.

It will be recalled that Kanu’s bail was revoked in March 2019, by Justice Binta Nyako, who also ordered for his arrest and directed that his trial on charges of treasonable felony proceed in his absence.

The judge, acting on an application by the lead prosecuting counsel, Magaji Labaran, anchored her orders for Kanu’s arrest and trial in absentia on the defendant’s failure to appear in court since April 25, 2017, without any reasonable explanation.

She added that Kanu’s sureties, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe had been ordered to either produce him in court or forfeit their N100m bail bonds.
