House Of Reps Takes A Stand On The State Of Insecurity In Ebonyi State

TEXT OF THE MOTION ON INSECURITY IN EBONYI STATE WHICH WAS UNANIMOUSLY ADOPTED BY HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES ON THURSDAY, 27th JANUARY 2022

URGENT NEED TO STOP THE DETERIORATING SECURITY SITUATION IN EBONYI STATE.

The House Notes:

1. That in Ebonyi State, the Security situation appears to have taken a turn for the worse, with the introduction by the state government of an armed militia called “Ebubeagu”.
2. Concerned that members of this militia are armed with AK 47, AK 49, Pump action guns, axes, machetes and other dangerous weapons, without any
   professional training on the use and deployment of such weapons.
3. Aware that members of this armed militia, who sometimes wear masks to cover their faces, mount road blocks in various parts of the state, creating fear in the minds of citizens who often mistake them for armed robbers.
4. Concerned that members of this armed militia have no known rules of engagement, and have become willing tools for all sorts of nefarious activities ranging from debt collection, illegal arrests, assaults, torture and assassinations.
5. Further concerned that this armed militia group are said to have detention facilities where victims are kept and tortured.
6. Cognizant that the activities of the Ebubeagu militia group is gravely interfering with, and jeopardizing, the operational activities of the regular Security agencies such as the Nigerian Police, Civil Defence, State Security Services etc.
7. Aware that within this week, the said Ebubeagu militia group has been hunting to arrest and possibly harm a former member of this House, Rt Hon. Linus Okorie, even when he did not commit any offence.
8. Further aware that in the past few weeks, innocent Ebonyi citizens have been attacked, and some killed in cold blood by the Ebubeagu militia, such as the recent killing of Nnaogo Akpoke Anyim in Akaeze, Ivo LGA; Ele Ama and Eric Ukpai from Akpoha in Afikpo North LGA; and Felix Nworogbo from Amegu Izzi in Abakaliki LGA, who was shot by Ebubeagu and later had his limbs amputated; while others such as Chika Nwoba and Ibiam Ibiam Jnr have been assaulted, dehumanised and tortured.
9. Worried that unless urgent steps are taken by the Federal authorities, there may be complete breakdown of law and order in Ebonyi State as armed Ebubeagu members continue their reign of terror on Ebonyi citizens, while individuals, groups and communities prepare to defend themselves in reprisal attacks.

Resolves to:

1. Urge the Inspector General of Police to investigate and prosecute all reported attacks and killings in Ebonyi State by the Ebubeagu militia.
2. Also urge the office of the National Security and Intelligence to investigate the status of the authorization of the various weapons – pump action guns, AK47 and other automatic weapons – which are freely in use by the Ebubeagu militia in Ebonyi State.
3. Urge the Committee on Police Affairs and National Security and Intelligence to ensure compliance.

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi has said that the Southern Senatorial zone of the state would not be permitted to contest for governorship position in the state come 2023.

Governor Umahi made the revelation on Wednesday through the Commissioner for Information and State Orientation, Barr. Orji Uchenna Orji while briefing newsmen on the outcome of the State Executive meeting in Abakaliki, the state capital.

He noted that Ebonyi South Senatorial zone has benefitted from the zoning arrangement, and therefore should not contest for the governorship position in the next general elections, adding that his administration will not support any gubernatorial candidate from Ebonyi South zone, except those from Abakaliki bloc.

The Commissioner also announced the lifting of the ban on political consultations and political aspirations ahead of 2023 general elections, especially as it concerns the zoning of the governorship seat.

His words: “The Chairman-in-Council, that is, the governor announces his intension to lift ban on political consultations ahead of the 2023 elections and expressed determination to consult widely, especially with the House of Assembly, the executive council, the founding fathers, women organization, CAN and other relevant groups within the state with a view to getting opinions on where the governorship seat shall be zoned to.

“For the governorship seat, he made it clear that Ebonyi South, having benefitted from the principle of zoning, shall not be allowed to contest as his administration’s support shall be for Abakaliki bloc.”

Meanwhile, the State Executive Council have started deliberating on where the governorship position shall be zoned between Ebonyi North and Ebonyi Central Senatorial zones.

EBONYI STATE IS UNDER SIEGE, HAS BECOME A KILLING FIELD- PDP

A text of Press Conference addressed by the Ebonyi State PDP Chairman on Wednesday, 26th January 2022.

Gentlemen of the press, I am saddened addressing you today as an Ebonyi man, I am saddened as a Nigerian, I am saddened as a democrat, but I am consoled because power is transient and we all have recognized our civic duty to continue the struggle to entrench democracy and democratic ideals in our country, and especially in our dear state Ebonyi.

For more than one year now Ebonyi State, a hitherto free state, where people love one another irrespective of creed or belief, have become a stifling society, a killing field only comparable to North Korea.
The people of Ebonyi State have been under siege, a siege imposed by a government that all Ebonyians joined hands together to create. It is no longer news that the All Progressive Congress (APC) government of Governor David Umahi has declared war on the hapless people of Ebonyi State, specifically targeting anyone seen or perceived to have a different opinion from that of the governor or his cronies.
In the last one year, more Ebonyians have died from Ebonyi State government induced causes than the COVID-19 and its various mutations put together in the state- in effect, an Ebonyian is more likely to die in the hand of the government of Ebonyi State than any other cause.

The Ebubeagu security network, an illegal private militia created by Governor David Umahi has become an albatross for the people of Ebonyi State. Businesses in Abakaliki metropolis have closed down as the Ebubeagu boys constantly and consistently unleash terror on innocent traders and business people.
It is now common place to see Ebubeagu checkpoints on every nook and cranny of Ebonyi State where the only thing they do is to harass and extort money from Keke operators and okada riders, woe betide anyone that refuses to “settle” them as such person may not be alive to tell the story.
The twin incidents in Akpoha community in Afikpo North and Akaeze in Ivo local government areas respectively where Ebubeagu militia unleashed Boko-Haram like violence on innocent, unarmed and hapless Ebonyi citizens are classic examples of the savage sadism that the Ebubeagu militia employs against hapless Ebonyi citizens.
Our party, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its members have remained the prime targets of the Ebubeagu militia. It is no longer news that Ebonyi State government, in Gestapo style unleashed violence on innocent travelers along Abakaliki-Enugu Expressway on Sunday….2022 and subsequently brutally abducted the State Publicity Secretary of our party, Comrade Nwoba Chika Nwoba, popularly called NCN. Comrade Nwoba was tortured and eventually blinded in one eye, and as if that was not enough, the government colluded with the Nigeria Police, Ebonyi State Command to drag Comrade Nwoba who was at the point of death to a kangaroo court in Abakaliki even when Comrade Nwoba was unable to stand or sit. Comrade Nwoba’s whereabouts remains unknown till date.
Just yesterday the Ebonyi State government in its tradition of flagrant and despotic abuse of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended) once again arrogated none existent powers to itself to declare a prominent Ebonyian and one of the leading lights of Ebonyi State and the PDP, Hon. Linus Okorie wanted.
This again is an eloquent pointer to the grave danger Ebonyians now face.
The Nigeria constitution and the various criminal justice statutes clearly outlines the procedure for declaration of any accused person wanted, and there is nowhere in the laws of Nigeria that state government or its officers are given such powers.

This particular declaration as announced by Mr. Uchenna Orji the state commissioner for information as has been widely noted by Ebonyians is an active Fatwa declaration on Hon. Linus Okorie. In effect, the Ebubeagu militia has just been unleashed on him, his associates, businesses as well as other members and supporters of PDP in Ebonyi State.
We, therefore, as Ndi Ebonyi, Opposition political party and concerned citizens of the state who believe in constitutional democracy and the rule of law call on President Mohammadu Buhari, the National Assembly and Security agencies to immediately step in and avert the collapse of Nigeria’s democracy by the action of one man whose inordinate quest for power is capable of sinking the ship of democracy and rule of law in Nigeria.
The illegal, obfuscatious and unconstitutional Ebubeagu and “Ebonyi Cybercrime law” which the government of Ebonyi State has deployed against law abiding citizens and residents of Ebonyi State be thrown away immediately and Governor Umahi called to order.

The PDP despite the retrogressive, manipulative, despotic and barbaric violent stance of Governor David Umahi’s government, is now more than ever determined, focused and ready in the existential struggle to rescue Ebonyi State from the claws of a greedy, power-drunk and despotic maniac.
It is appalling that despite the fact that all southern states in Nigeria have established security outfits to assist the traditional security agencies to respond to emerging security issues in the region, it is only in Ebonyi State that the state’s security outfit has rather turned its guns on the people it is actually meant to protect.
We are not tired, we are not deterred , Ebonyi rescue is a collective duty.

PRESIDENTIAL ASPIRANT, SAM OHUABUNWA STORMS BENIN CITY FOR CONSULTATIONS WITH PDP

As the quest for Nigeria’s next president continues, a presidential aspirant, Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa is set to visit Benin City, Edo State for further consultations on his ambition.

He is scheduled to visit the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) on Wednesday, 26th January, 2022.

Ohuabunwa is one of the earliest Nigerians to express interest in becoming president of the country in the 2023 presidential election.

Speaking to newsmen, Ohuabunwa explained that he would be having two consultation meetings in Edo State upon his arrival.

“I will be visiting officials of my party, the People’s Democratic Party (PDP). My presence in the State is to consult with the PDP and other stakeholders over my presidential ambition”, Ohuabunwa explained.

Earlier in 2021, Ohuabunwa visited Benin City Edo State capital to inagurate the Edo State Chapter of the New Nigeria Group (NNG), a political group he has established in nearly all the 36 states of Nigeria including the FCT.

Recall that Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa in September 2021 declared to contest for the position of the president in the 2023 elections.

He is the immediate past President of the Nigerian Pharmaceutical Society of Nigeria.

Ohuabunwa is also the former Chairman of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group (NESG), founder of Neimeth Pharmaceuticals and Convener of the New Nigeria Group.

Mazi Sam Ohuabunwa’s major thrust is to birth a new Nigeria that is a first world nation
(Globally competitive)and that works for all citizens.

Soldiers in Burkina Faso announced over state television Monday that they had seized power in the West African nation and dissolved its government and parliament.

They also said they had closed the country’s borders and promised a “return to constitutional order” within a “reasonable time”.

The whereabouts of President Roch Kaboré is unclear, but the officer said that all those detained were in a secure location.

The coup comes a day after troops seized barracks, and gunshots were heard in the capital.

Earlier, the ruling People’s Movement for Progress (PMP) party said that both Mr Kaboré and a government minister had survived an assassination attempt.

On Sunday, mutinying troops demanded the sacking of military chiefs and more resources to fight Islamist militants.

The army statement cited the worsening security situation and Mr Kaboré’s alleged inability to unite the nation as reasons for overthrowing him, AFP news agency reports.

The statement was issued in the name of a group not heard of previously, the Patriotic Movement for Safeguard and Restoration or MPSR, its French acronym.

“MPSR, which includes all sections of the army, has decided to end President Kabore’s post today,” it said.

FORMER PRESIDENT, GOODLUCK JONATHAN’S CAMPAIGN POSTERS FLOOD ABUJA, LAGOS, AHEAD OF 2023 PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION

The posters of former President Goodluck Jonathan are currently in some part of Lagos State and Abuja (FCT).

According to the information on the posters, which have the inscription, “Please Run, Nigerians Are Calling Again,” a group known as Greater Nigeria Ambassadors (GRENA), are behind them.

Although Jonathan is yet to throw his hat into the ring, there are signs that he is interested in the race.

There are reports that Jonathan is being considered by a section of the presidency and some governors of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the presidential ticket of the party come 2023.

The former president has been very frequent at the seat of power, hobnobbing with his successor.

This has created anxiety in the ruling party, which has other presidential aspirants from the South, should APC decide to zone its presidential ticket to the region.

Last year, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) had alleged that the APC was wooing Jonathan but the APC responded saying he was free to contest on its platform.

Jonathan has been absent from key PDP functions of late. He did not attend the party’s convention, which held late last year.

In Lagos, the posters are on the ever busy Ijaiye road, Ogba, Oba Akran Avenue, Ikeja under bridge and both sides of the road leading to the Murtala Muhammed airport road in Ikeja.

In Abuja, the posters are in AYA, Asokoro and Finance bridge and around Federal Secretariat.

Elected alongside late President Umaru Musa YarÁdua in 2007, Jonathan took over when Yar’Ádua died in 2010, and won in 2011 when he contested.

However, he lost the 2015 election to President Muhammadu Buhari, becoming the first incumbent Nigerian president to lose an election.

THE OLDEST MONARCH IN SOUTH EAST, IGWE MBURUBU FOR BURIAL APRIL 21

The royal family of Mburubu community in Nkanu East Local Government Area of Enugu State has announced the burial date of their traditional ruler Igwe, His Royal Majesty, Igwe Emmanuel Mmuonyelu Ogbuzulu Eze JP, Igwe Ozulumba 1.

According to information from Prince Lawrence Ozoemena Ezeh, the Igwe will begin his final journey on April 21, 2022.

He will be buried according to the rites and customs of Mburubu people in the community.

Igwe Ozulumba 1 passed on in the early hours of Tuesday, December 21st, 2021 in Enugu, after a brief illness.

Until his death, Igwe Emmanuel Ezeh was the traditional ruler of Mburubu community, consisting of seven clans.

AJM NEWS gathered that late Igwe Emmanuel Ezeh reigned for 53 years, beginning from 1968 when he was crowned the Igwe of Mburubu till 2021 when he passed on, making him the oldest monarch in South East of Nigeria.

He was aged 94 years.

Igwe Emmanuel Ezeh is survived by his loving wife, sons, daughters, grandsons, granddaughters and great-granddaughters.

Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria (MACBAN), said its members have teamed up with security agents to tackle unidentified gunmen and suspected criminals in Imo State, southeastern Nigeria.

A chieftain of the group, Sarki Makao, who revealed this to newsmen, said the partnership with security agents was approved by state government authorities.

According to Makao, the effort against insecurity in Imo State has improved since the arrival of “Miyetti Allah vigilante” members on January 3, 2022.

“People always accuse Fulani herdsmen of perpetrating the crimes in Imo State and other parts of the country, so we want to prove them wrong, and that’s why we have partnered with security agents to fight crimes.

“We also have vigilante in places like Ebonyi, Zamfara and Kaduna. Our aim is to help government stop the insecurity in the country and bring peace between herdsmen and people in many communities,” said the Miyetti Allah chieftain.

FEW HOURS TO NNAMDI KANU’S TRIAL, FG FILES FRESH TERRORISM CHARGES AGAINST KANU

Barely 24 hours before the appearance of the leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in court for the continuation of his trial, the federal government of Nigeria has increased the charges against him from 7 to 15.

The amended 15-count charge bordering on acts of terrorism was filed at the Federal High Court in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), and made available to newsmen on Monday.
It was signed by the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation, MB Abubakar, on behalf of FG.

Count One of the charge read, “That you Nnamdi Kanu, Male, Adult, of Afatanukwu Ibeku, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State sometimes in 2021 being a member and leader of Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, a proscribed Organisation, did commit an act in furtherance of an act of Terrorism against the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the People of Nigeria by making a broadcast received and heard in Nigeria within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, with intent to intimidate the population and you threatened that people will die, the whole world will stand still and you thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 1(2)(b) of the Terrorism Prevention Amendment Act, 2013.”

“That you Nnamdi Kanu, Male, Adult, of Afatanukwu Ibeku, Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State on diverse dates between the month of March and April 2015 imported into Nigeria and kept in Ubulisiuzor in Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra State within the jurisdiction of this Honourable Court, a Radio Transmitter known as Tram 50L concealed in a container of used household items which you declared as used household items, and you thereby committed an offence contrary to section 47(2)(a) of Criminal Code Act, Cap, C45 Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004,” another count read.

In October last year, the government had filed an amended seven-count against the detained IPOB leader, charges which bordered on treasonable felony and his alleged involvement in acts of terrorism at the same court.

Justice Binta Nyako, who was to preside over the case, later fixed Tuesday (January 18), to hear some pending applications, including the one Kanu filed to be discharged and acquitted.

Kanu initially faces a seven-count treasonable felony charge will now enter his fresh plea to a 15-count amended charge.

He was first arrested in 2015 on charges bordering on terrorism, treasonable felony, managing an unlawful society, publication of defamatory matter, illegal possession of firearms, and improper importation of goods, among others.

UMAHI LACKS THE TEMPERAMENT TO BE PRESIDENT, DOESN’T TOLERATE PRESS FREEDOM AND FREEDOM OF POLITICAL OPPONENTS, SAYS HURIWA

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has said that Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State lacks the temperament to be president of Nigeria noting his record of viciously attacking opponents including journalists.

HURIWA, in a statement jointly signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, and the Media Director, Zainab Yusuf, noted that Umahi as president of Nigeria would be worse as a dictator than General Sani Abacha noting the governor’s antecedents.

HURIWA said its stand was based on the threat by Umahi to “deal ruthlessly” and to ban two journalists, the Sun and Vanguard Correspondents in Ebonyi State because of their reports.

The statement read in part:

“If the bedrocks of democracy are the free exercise of fundamental freedoms enshrined in the Nigerian Constitution such as the freedom of expression, then unrepentant dictators like David Umahi should not go near the office of president or else the tyrannical regime of Uganda’s dictator, Yoweiri Museveni, would be a child’s play and Nigeria would return to a primitive era whereby might becomes right.

“David Umahi’s legendary intolerance of press freedom and the freedom of political opponents to go about their legitimate businesses would mean that the oppressive regime of late General Sani Abacha would just be inconsequential compared to what Dave Umahi will do with the presidential powers just as he would collapse Nigeria into a one party state.

“As President, Umahi will capture or jail his political opponents and will rule as he likes with no accountability or transparency. Nigeria must never be ruled by persons who are worse than the bad President we have had since 2015 for that would lead to disintegration.”

HURIWA recalled that Umahi, recently, at Aso Rock Villa, intimated President Buhari of his ambition to run for the Office of the President in 2023 and promised to replicate his feats as a governor at the national level if he eventually gets to fly the party ticket and win the presidential election.

HURIWA then asked Nigerians to reject Umahi who as governor of the tiny Ebonyi State threatened to deal ruthlessly with two journalists covering the state if they continued to write reports that create ‘panic’ among the people.
