SENATOR BEN MURRAY-BRUCE SIGNS AN ACCORD WITH EBONYI GOVERNMENT TO ESTABLISH CINEMA CENTRES IN THE STATE

The founder and President of SILVERBIRD Group, Senator Ben Murray-Bruce has signed a pact with Ebonyi State government to establish SILVERBIRD CINEMAS in the state.

The signing of the pact which took place at the Ecumenical Centre in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State capital, during a Business Forum Summit on Tuesday, also had in attendance so many chief executives of business conglomerates and economic stakeholders across the country.

Silverbird Cinema is a movie theatre, which revolutionalized cinema in Nigeria, and which pioneered the first five-screens Cineplex
in sub-Saharan Africa.

Presently, Silverbird Cinema has over 50 screens in Lagos, Abuja, Port-Harcourt, Uyo and Ghana.

According to Sen. Ben Bruce, Silverbird Entertainment Group will establish cinema outlets in Ebonyi by
December 2020 to meet the demands of the anticipated Christmas ‘crowd’.

His words: “Silverbird Entertainment will install cinema screens of 100×75, 100×35 seaters at the Ebonyi International Shopping Mall.

“We intend to bring ‘box to boxes’ around the world to Abakaliki as we are the pioneer of modern cinema services in Nigeria with reach
across Liberia, Ghana among others.

“We have also reserved the biggest edifice at the state’s Centenary city Abakaliki for the Silicon University which complies with vision of the computer village businessmen.

“Ebonyi is a state of about three million people with 70 per cent of the population being of youthful age which effectively drives the economy of any given society”.

A serious crisis is brewing in a sleepy-riverine Ozizza community in Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State which shares boarders with Cross River State over reports that a pontoon boat which was inherited by the people from the military government of the defunct Imo State has been allegedly sold to an ‘undisclosed person’.

The alleged sale which has triggered anxiety among youths and elders of the community including a State Assembly lawmaker from the area had been made public following an announcement over the weekend on the State-owned Ebonyi Broadcasting Service through the office of the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kenneth Ugbala to the effect that the ‘State government has allegedly sold the said property.

About 45 feet in size, the boat which was handed over the people by the military administration of Amadi Ikweche under the old Imo State 1986 to help solve the transportation needs of the people of the area to ferry them across the Ozizza beach to their close neighbours in Igonigoni, Cross River State features a triangular-shaped hull with a wide beam which enabled it to accommodate more passengers.

Members of the community known and celebrated for their fishing prowess told news men that the said radio announcement purporting the sale of the boat came as a rude shock to them as they were neither informed nor consulted by anyone before the purported action was taken.

One of the villagers, Mr. Ikwor Egwu, a middle-aged man and a native of Orrah which comprises a group of about nine villages narrated that they were stunned by the presence of some strange persons in the community who were at the river bank with a claim that they had purchased and came to assess the pontoon boat.

“We had to summon an emergency meeting after asking them to leave our community immediately to avoid being confronted by angry youths before using the traditional ‘omu’ (palm frond) to tie round the boat because this is the only inheritance our fathers in our long journey from Imo to Abia before being carved into the present-day Ebonyi State.
Why would the government not think of either repairing it, procuring a new boat or at least informing us through a meeting, delegation or any form of deliberation whatsoever before coming up with the claim that it has sold our pontoon (boat) just by a mere radio announcement? Who is the said buyer by the way and why was our community not consulted?, he queried.

Mr. Ikwor added: “We feel something is fishy about the whole drama and this is unacceptable just as it is condemnable and we have met at Ogo Orrah (the community’s playground) with a strong resolve to send a letter informing the government of the dangers of such illegal action without following a due process, that it is if the government is even officially aware of the purported sale”.
Another villager, Mr. Ogbonnia Chukwu who also spoke on the matter said the youths of the community will never allow the action go unchallenged unless the government or anybody expressing interest in buying the property does the right thing.

“If they think that there are no men capable of challenging them in this our (Ozizza) community they have to think again because we have a lot of well-to-do men who can square up with anybody especially when we feel our community has been ignored or relegated to the background. We will not allow that no matter who is behind it”, he insisted.
Also speaking, a lawmaker in the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Kingsley Ikoro representing Afikpo North East State constituency for the third time who was also at the meeting told the Press that he was surprised to also hear the announcement purporting the sale of the pontoon boat on air just like the rest of the villagers.

In his words, “It was after I heard the radio announcement to confirm it by myself that I launched investigations into the matter only to discover that it was even a colleague of mine in the House who is behind the purported sale obviously in connivance with some people in government. And our people are saying that even though the government has the right to decide on what to do with it but at least, courtesy demands that they should be informed and carried along in the entire process because it is the community that the pontoon had served their transportation needs and it is still there because they keep a watch over it.”

Hon. Ikoro who quickly waded in to calm the angry youths and elders of his community down reiterated that ordinarily, his people have been facing even greater challenges at the moment exporting their food crops and particularly fishes to neighbouring Cross River State for sales. “Our people even expected the government to come to their aid instead of the reverse being the case. We don’t have basic amenities in this community- not electricity, not good roads, not portable and drinkable water, not even a large market for traders to use and I have been doing my best to see how these good things of life could get to our people

Now, for somebody to just wake up from any side of the bed and think he or she can intrude into this place and transact such business without the knowledge of people of our community is a downright no and I stand with their resolve in this meeting that it will not be allowed. People have to be made to do things right and to do what is right at any point in time and that is what the democracy we are practising is all about- right to air hearing, justice and equity”, he concluded.

He, however, warned that knowing the background of his people, the said buyers should better seek for ways of approaching the community to reach a truce and broker peace with them or they might face resistance having been cautioned to steer clear till things are done right by the people, stating further that the community has his support to take all valid legal and lawful steps including writing officially to the State’s Chief Executive, Engr. David Umahi whom he described as a peace-loving father to bare their views on the matter.

“Our people know and trust the Governor as a man of honesty and a peace-lover. That is why they have always supported him and my party- the PDP. And I am very optimistic that His Excellency, the Governor Umahi I know will not betray that trust. That is why we have to first and foremost officially inform him in writing and also possibly send a delegation to meet with him on this matter. I have assured my people that I stand by them and they trust I will forever do until the right is done”, he concluded.

OHANEZE NDIGBO REPLIES CHIEF OF ARMY STAFF, BURATAI FOR THREATENING TO IMPOSE STATE OF EMERGENCY IN THE WHOLE SOUTH EAST

The apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohaneze Ndigbo have reacted over the comment credited to the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai, in which he threatened to declare a State of Emergency in the five states of the Southeast, if the youths continue to attack security agents in the zone.

In a Press Statement signed by the Ag National Secretary & National Publicity Secretary Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prince Uche Achi-Okpaga, the group told the Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Burutai that he hasn’t the powers to impose a State of Emergency in the Southeast, as it maintained that such a threat, considering the country’s constitution can only be carried out by the National Assembly on demand by the President.

The group noted that while it decries violence in any form in the states, it takes particular exception to an open threat and warning to South East governors who by the country’s constitution are Chief Security Officers of their states but are lame ducks in practice as all security commands come from Abuja.

The group added: “Ohanaeze Ndigbo finds it particularly provocative for General Buratai to issue such a warning to governors of the South East where relative peace prevails, while he has not done the same in the North Central, North West and North East which have become theatres of war and where army posts and bases have been subjected to incessant attacks by the Boko Haram, ISWA/ISIS, bandits and Fulani herdsmen, killing and maiming Nigerian soldiers.

“It is highly surprising that an army chief who was watching as the governor of Katsina State was negotiating and taking pictures with armed bandits would turn round to threaten to impose a state of emergency in states where unarmed citizens are agitating against the harsh and inhuman conditions they have been subjected to by their country.”

It would be recalled that two officials of the State Security Service (SSS) were killed last month in Enugu during a clash with members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), which also led to the death of about twenty one IPOB members.

PRESS STATEMEMT

The attention of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has been drawn to a statement credited to the Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai, threatening to impose a state of emergency in the South East if Governors of the states allowed any further attack on security forces in the states, a statement he has not denied.

HON. LILIAN NGOZI EZIULOH FOOTS THE HOSPITAL BILL OF A YOUNG WIDOW TRAPPED IN MATER HOSPITAL, AFIKPO

The member representing Afikpo North/East Constituency at the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Lilian Ngozi Eziuloh on Monday cleared the hospital bill of a young widow, Oko Beatrice who had been trapped at the Mater Hospital Afikpo, due to her inability to pay all her hospital bills.

Hon. Eziuloh who spoke with AJM NEWS correspondent, said she decided to pay a visit to the hospital with some members of her foundation, NGOZI CARING HEARTS FOUNDATION when she came across a very young woman, Oko Beatrice, whose husband died in a motorcycle accident few months ago, and her mother Mrs. Ngozi Anuma.

The lawmaker, Hon. Eziuloh was informed that Oko Beatrice from Amaekpo Ozizza, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, delivered a baby through complicated major operation on the 29th of June 2020.

She said: “I just decided to pay a visit to the hospital.
Nobody told us about the case of the young woman, Beatrice before visiting the hospital.

“I was touched by the condition of Beatrice who has become a widow in her young age, and then decided to assist her in my own little way”.

It was also gathered that Oko Beatrice lost her husband, Sunday Oko Isu when her pregnancy was only three months, and was left to the mercy of God and the care of her mother.

Beatrice almost lost her life to the complicity of the pregnancy, which made her to spend five days on Oxygen and took twenty seven pints of blood, as a result, her accumulated hospital bills was close to a million Naira.

However, the parents of Beatrice residing at Ama Obolobo Nkpoghoro, Afikpo tried their best and sourced for money and paid some part of the bill, remaining N290, 000, which had kept her and her new born baby in the hospital for months.

It was during the routine visit to the hospital by Hon. Eziuloh that she paid the remaining N290, 000 through her foundation, and the young widow, Oko Beatrice was finally discharged and allowed to go home.

Meanwhile, the management of Mater Hospital and the good people of Afikpo North LGA have appreciated Hon. Lilian Ngozi Eziuloh for the kind gesture shown to the poor widow, Oko Beatrice.

PRESIDENT BUHARI ASSURES NIGERIANS THAT THEIR CARS AND GENERATORS WILL BE CONVERTED FREELY TO RUN ON GAS FROM OCTOBER

The Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, says the Federal Government will from October begin converting the cars and generators of Nigerians to run on gas.

The Minister noted that the conversion would be done free of charge for all Nigerians, adding that the move would curb the effect of the hike in pump price of petrol.

The minister who said this on NTA’s ‘Good Morning Nigeria’ on Monday said the move would reduce carbon emissions as well as the demand for Premium Motor Spirit otherwise known as petrol.

The Minister said: “The alternative we are now introducing is gas, which is definitely going to be cheaper than the subsidised rate of PMS. So, what we are trying to encourage Nigerians to do now is to convert their cars to dual fuel.

“That means your car can use either gas or petrol and that will be done for free because the government is going to ensure that you are able to convert your vehicles for free.

“And when you convert your car for free, you go to the filling station, you see the price of PMS (Premium Motor Spirit) you see the price of gas, you can decide to buy LPG (Liquefied Petroleum Gas) or CNG (Compressed Natural Gas), you can decide to buy LNG (Liquefied Natural gas). These are all going to be available and we are going to have a roll out plan for this within October.

“Nigerians will have alternatives. It is like introducing a toll on the roads. When you introduce a tollgate, you are expected and required by law to also create an alternative. So, we are also creating that alternative so that you can go to buy gas.”

Sylva further revealed that the Federal Government launched a similar pilot scheme with commercial tricycles in Port Harcourt which they converted to gas and it was successful.

He said the initiative would be extended to small capacity generators colloquially known as ‘I better pass my neighbour’.

The former Governor of Bayelsa State stated that filling stations owned by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation would be the first to begin selling gas to vehicles.

Sylva said the use of gas is cleaner and climate friendly, adding that once this is achieved, Nigeria would receive funding from foreign donors.

He said, “We are going to convert ‘I better pass my neighbour’. So, you will have a situation where in your house, your gas cylinder will be connected to your generator and cooker. So, you don’t need any other fuel apart from gas to run your generators.

“It will become cheaper and cleaner. Of course, our carbon emissions will actually reduce and we are expecting to gain some money from climate change (sic) for reducing our carbon emission. This is going to be a policy direction that will create a lot of opportunities.”

He said all NNPC filling stations and also some private sector marketers had signed on to the initiative, adding that the scheme would start in one part of the country and then spread to others.

When asked how Nigeria could benefit from the free initiative, Sylva responded, “Your car should be in a fairly good condition. That is the only condition to be met because if your car is not in a very good condition, I don’t know how it is going to convert. We are already in discussion with the NURTW and they are already very happy,” the minister said.

In his usual manner, the member representing Ikwo/Ezza South Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, Hon. Chinedu Ogah has attracted relief materials worth millions of Naira for the Internally Displaced Persons, IDPs, in his constituency.

The items attracted by the lawmaker via the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) include Bags of rice and other food items, Mattresses, Bed Sheets, Blankets, among others.

The relief materials were shared on Friday to the affected individuals.

From all indications, Hon. Chinedu Ogah who is also the last man to join his colleagues at the Green Chamber exactly one year ago, has performed better than several other House of Rep members and Senators from Ebonyi State who were in the National Assembly before him; and by so doing has proved to the electorate that the representatives can do well if only they mean well for those that elected them, by eschewing selfishness, and taking a strong decision to serve.

Who knew before the coming of Hon. Ogah that a lawmaker could attract and share federal appointments to his constituents and beyond, as if he’s sharing biscuits to children?

Who knew that a member of the National Assembly could restore electricity to a town that had been in darkness for years, just within one month he assumed office, if not Hon. Ogah?

Indeed, Hon. Ogah has truly set the pace for others to follow.

This recent feat of Ogah is quite commendable!

The Director of Radio Biafra and leader of the Indigenous People Of Biafra (IPOB), Mazi Nnamdi Kanu has reinstated that he would be continually committed to the struggle for the actualization of the sovereign state of Biafra, till Biafra is achieved.

According to the IPOB leader, though the task is a herculean one which has led to the killing of some Biafrans by Nigerian government, yet, he and his group cannot be cowed into leaving the agitation, adding that the fight for Biafra is in the mind and a thing of the spirit.

His Words: “The burden of restoring Biafra is herculean and it crystallizes in the constant danger of being killed by wanton acts of Nigerian State terror unleashed by a terrorist Federal government that has successfully cowed our elected and non-elected leaders.

“Since it’s now clear that those that call themselves your leaders are imprisoned by fear, I say to you – fear not; for victory and succor shall be ours in no distant future and any Biafran blood lost in this epic struggle will be requited manifold.

“In my most private moments – when I reflect on this struggle and it’s fallouts- I have often been tempted, like Christ, to ask that this cup be passed from me. I’m sure you all feel the same in many fleeting moments of despair that is common with the fragile human spirit.

“Yet, even as a mere mortal, I dare not relent because I know for sure that mine is a divine and generational call. I know that I must make this personal sacrifice for the collective and eternal good of our people. I ask you all to do the same, even as it is a great burden. Following the attack on an Abuja based Blueprint Newspapers Reporter, Prince Paul Okah in his home town, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, right at the compound of an ex-Chairman of Afikpo North and APC Chieftain, Pharmacist Anthony Ekoh on Sunday, 23 August, 2020, a Civil Society Organisation, the Human Rights Defenders (HURIDE), Ebonyi State Chapter, has petitioned the Inspector General of Police (IGP), Mohammed Adamu, over the unwarranted attack on the journalist.

According to information gathered by AJM NEWS, as made available by the victim, Paul Okah, the attack was carried out by some suspected thugs and cult members working for a particular influential politician in Afikpo.

The attack on the journalist, which is one of the several attacks on journalists and bloggers in Afikpo and Ebonyi State in general have attracted strong condemnations from several groups and individuals.

From investigations made by AJM NEWS, Afikpo North LGA has recorded the highest number of attacks on media practitioners amongst other towns in the state, particularly in this present administration.

Ebonyi State seems to be the headquarters of human right abuses in Nigeria today.
Recently, we reported to your office of the attacks on Edward Nnachi, a Punch correspondent and other journalists in Ebonyi State by agents purportedly working for the State Government. The case of Mr. Paul Okah is yet another way of suppressing the truth in Ebonyi State.

The reporter On Saturday the 22nd day of August 2020 got a phone call from Pharm. Tony Ekoh to visit and cover his Ikeji activities (celebration of New Yam festival) the following day being Sunday. He got to Pharm. Tony Ekoh’s place around 4pm. On his arrival, he stumbled on Mudi and his cult boys.

Immediately they saw him, they charged towards him and were roundly questioning his powers to report the activities of their master, Chief Mudi Erhenede and themselves.

As he was trying to make
representations, one Emmanuel (a.k.a Bakassi) slapped him whereas his group descended on him heavily. He was seriously manhandled by the Mudi Erhenede boys who watched as the manhandling lasted. He was rescued from the situation by bystanders with the help of Ogbonnia Nwachi and shepherded into another journalist’s car (Chief Onya Effor of Unity F.M, Abakaliki).

The reporter has been receiving threats to his life and that of his family for discharging his
legitimate duties as a professional journalist. On numerous occasions, he has received such threats to his life through phone calls by the cult boys with 07036862362.
The threats still persist till date.

In view of the above, we humbly pray for the following:
*That immediate investigation should be launched by your Men to unearth the whole truth about the human right abuses on journalists and other media practitioners in Ebonyi State.

*That the nefarious activities of the agents of the present administration in Ebonyi State especially on the death threat been issued by them to Mr. Paul Okah of Blueprint Newspaper, the Editor -in- chief Glonatnewsonlne be judiciously looked into as to bring these individuals and other bloodthirsty individuals to book.

*That Ebonyi State is quick turning to a state of nature as envisaged by hobbes where life will be nasty, brutish and short owing to the activities of this hunch men who are hell bent on stampeding opposing voices.

*That the life of Mr. Paul Okah of Blueprint Newspaper, the Editor -in-Chief Glonatnewsonline is not only being threatened by this agents of darkness but also that of his family for reporting the numerous dastardly acts of evil men masquerading themselves as politicians in Ebonyi State.

*That the security agencies in the State seems to be helpless as none of the incidents reported to them saw the light of the day and we have it on strong conviction that this too, may go the same way and as such, we implore your good office to come to the aid of the citizens of Ebonyi State and other media practitioners.

The governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi has made open his plans to downsize the staff of the Ebonyi State University (EBSU), which the governor said is overstaffed and must be reduced to a bearable number.

To this effect, the governor has ordered for the immediate sack of some staff of the university.

Governor Umahi noted that the employment of EBSU is the highest in the country for private or state universities, adding that the state don’t have enough resources for such luxury, as he also promised to give the sacked staffs some money under the SME to start businesses.

The governor who gave the order for the reduction of EBSU Staff last weekend, also appealed to the management and staff of the university to make sacrifices of 20 percent of their salaries.

His words: “I appeal to EBSU to make sacrifices. When the Federal institution, FUNAI university was challenged, every worker there sacrificed 20 percent of their salaries for the period of one year.

“EBSU must make sacrifices. EBSU must reduce their workforce and those being reduced, I can give them money under SME to start businesses.

“The employment of EBSU is the highest in the country for private or state universities. We don’t have such luxury, when you make sacrifices, we will make our sacrifices.

“If you don’t want to make sacrifices, we will not make sacrifices. If they don’t want to score us well, then they can score us whatever they want.

“But we are willing to support EBSU to make sacrifices, to ensure that the staffs and their families are paid their salaries”.

AMAIZU PROGRESSIVE UNION (APU) LAGOS BRANCH RESCUES AN AFIKPO WOMAN SEEN IN A VIRAL VIDEO BEGGING FOR ALMS IN LAGOS; HANDS HER OVER TO EBONYI STATE GOVERNMENT:

Sons and daughters of Amaizu, Afikpo North Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, who are residing in Lagos, through their group known as Amaizu Progressive Union (APU) Lagos Branch have rescued one Mrs. Oyire Egwu Okocha, an indigene of Afikpo North LGA, who was seen in a viral video clip asking for alms in Lagos.

AJM NEWS gathered that the Amaizu Progressive Union embarked on the rescue mission when the beggar, Mrs. Oyire Egwu identified herself as an indigene of Afikpo, precisely from Amaizu as she was being interviewed in the video clip.

The APU who seriously searched for the woman in Lagos and later succeeded in getting her, arranged and brought her to Ebonyi, provided clothes for her and her children and also lodged them in a hotel in Afikpo for six days.

AJM NEWS was also rightly informed by the Coordinator of the Rescue Team of Amaizu Progressive Union, Mrs. Uzoma Agha, that the Union was planning on rehabilitating the rescued woman, Oyire Egwu before the Ebonyi State Government through the Caretaker Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area stepped into the matter.

Meanwhile, the APU has officially handed over the woman to Hon. Amauche Otunta, the Caretaker Chairman, Afikpo North LGA.

When AJM NEWS Correspondent spoke with the rescued woman, Mrs. Oyire Egwu; she expressed her gratitude towards the Amaizu Progressive Union, the Ebonyi State Government and the Caretaker Chairman of Afikpo North LGA, Hon. Amauche Otutnta and the general public for the kind gesture shown to her and her children.

She extended her thanks to her family and Amaizu community for the way she was honoured and welcomed.

Mrs. Egwu also said she was ready to accept any job and assistance offered to her, just to enable her meet her needs and take proper care of her three children who are with her now in Afikpo, as she also pleaded with those concerned to fulfill all the promises made to her.

Below Is The Speech Presented On Behalf Of The Amaizu Progressive Union (APU), By Mrs. Uzoma Agha, Coordinator of The Rescue Team Of Amaizu Progressive Union During The Hand Over Of Mrs. Oyire Egwu Okocha, The Lady Who Was Found Begging For Alms And Homeless In Lagos, On Tuesday, 11/08/2020.

“We have now come to the end of our own part of this Oyire saga. The Amaizu Progressive Union, Lagos Branch, under the coordination of the Chairman, Mr. Raphael Ogbonna Okpani and Mrs. Nnenna Okoronkwo, the President of the Women’s wing, together worked tirelessly to rescue Oyire Egwu Okocha from the slums of Lagos, where she was begging on the street.

“The efforts of Mr. Mike Chukwu, Mr. Dom Okoronkwo, Mr. Aloysius Agha, Mr. Eko Austin, Mr. Aloy ldam and a host of others too numerous to mention are very well appreciated. All of the members of the APU Lagos branch put heads together on how to rehabilitate the said lady. Mr. Urom Enya was sent by the Union to go and pick her up. A job he did perfectly well.

“The union was ready to ensure that the woman is properly taken care of. The Ebonyi State Government through the Chairman of Afikpo North Local Government Area came into the matter. The Chairman of Afikpo North LGA saw it as her personal duty to take care of the woman.

“APU Lagos branch have done their best. I was made the Coordinator of the team of the Rescue Mission. With the support of all concerned we did a great job. The Union accommodated her for six days in a hotel in Ehugbo. To God be the Glory she has been handed over to the representatives of the LGA who have promised to give her accommodation and a job.

“A big thank you to all APU members.
A big thank you to the Chairman of Afikpo North LGA for her time and financial support.

“We do hope the Ebonyi state Government will continue from where Amaizu Progressive Union Lagos branch stopped. Kudos to Amaizu Progressive Union for your show of love. The entire Ehugbo community salutes you. Long Live APU Lagos branch”
