Ebonyi Local Government Elections Slated For Saturday, August 15, 2020

EBONYI LOCAL GOVERNMENT ELECTIONS SLATED FOR SATURDAY, AUGUST 15, 2020:

{…The Council Elections Would Be Free, Fair And Credible, As Demanded By The Representatives Of The Different Political Parties In Our Meeting, Says EBSIEC Chairman}

Otu Obiahu, AJM NEWS

Following the order given to the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) by the state governor, Engr. Dave Umahi to conduct Council elections in the state, the Commission has officially announced Saturday, August 15, 2020 as the date for the elections.

The Chairman of EBSIEC, Barr. Josy Eze, made this known in a meeting held with the officials of all the political parties and security agencies at Ebonyi State Traditional Council Hall, Onwe Road, Abakaliki, the state capital.

The Chairman stressed that the elections supposed to be held on April 25, 2020 but was suspended for some months as the deadly virus kept spreading in the state and country at large.

He however, maintained that the election would be held this time on 15th August since the government of Federation had lifted ban on electoral activities in the country and the Commission had met with the stakeholders alongside the party chieftains in the state.

The EBSIEC Chairman further noted that the elections would hold in all the 13 local government areas and 171 wards in the state.

He therefore, urged all the registered political parties that met the requirements for the council polls to feel free by carrying out their campaign activities and making sure they keep the COVID-19 protocol, adding that the elections would be Free, Fair and Credible as demanded by the representatives of the different political parties in the meeting.

It would be recalled that Governor Umahi had over the weekend announced the lifting of ban on political activities and council elections in the state, which was earlier suspended due to the COVID-19 pandemic and the associated lockdown.

Governor Umahi had also during the period of the suspension of the elections, appointed Caretaker Committee Chairmen to replace the former chairmen in the 13 local government areas of the state, pending when elections would be held.

Governor Umahi Decides To Pay N100 Million To Ex-Ebonyi Governor, Martin Elechi, As A ‘Thank You Gift’ For Building Ochudo City

GOVERNOR UMAHI DECIDES TO PAY N100 MILLION TO EX-EBONYI GOVERNOR, MARTIN ELECHI, AS A ‘THANK YOU GIFT’ FOR BUILDING OCHUDO CITY:

Otu Obiahu, AJM NEWS

The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi has ordered that the immediate past governor of the state, who is now an APC Chieftain, Chief Martin Elechi, be paid the sum of (N100 Million) One Hundred Million Naira.

The huge sum, AJM NEWS gathered, would be given to Chief Elechi as a token of appreciation and to say a big thank you to him for the construction of Ochudo City during his tenure.

It is of note that Chief Martin Nwachor Elechi during his two terms and 8 years in office as Ebonyi State Governor, embarked on several projects, which had direct bearing on the lives and well-being of Ebonyians.

Some of those projects include:
The NATIONAL FISTULA CENTRE, Abakakaliki; the construction of Hospitals in the 3 Senatorial Zones of the state, construction of new structures in all primary, secondary and tertiary institutions in the state, and the introduction of boarding schools. The best graduating students were given the opportunity to study abroad under the state’s scholarship programme known as HIPACT.

Others are: Akanu Ibiam International Conference Centre (ICC), Ultramodern Rice Mills situated at Afikpo for Ebonyi South, Iboko for Ebonyi North, and Ikwo for Ebonyi Central, Ultramodern Digital Radio & Television Stations.
Ultramodern International Market, Oferekpe Water Scheme, Ebonyi State Pipe Industry, the Ocho Udo City, the state Secrietariat Complex, among others.

The N100 million, however, is not part of his owed entitlements as a former governor.

It would be recalled that Chief Elechi had earlier rejected a Car gift (SUV Prado Jeep) presented to him by Governor Umahi couple of years ago.

Meanwhile, all eyes are now on the APC Chieftain, Chief Martin Elechi to see what becomes of this Cash Appreciation Gift’ from Governor Umahi, which some have described as unnecessary and a possible trap to set him up, whether he would accept it, or reject it as usual.

{…The Petitioners Should Wait For Another Opportunity, And Lobby When The Time Comes, As This One Is Already Gone”, Says House Of Reps}

By Otu Obiahu, AJM NEWS

The Federal House Of Representatives on Friday, 9th July, supported the earlier decision of the Federal Government to build the Federal College of Education in Isu, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State.

The House made their stand known after listening to multiple petitions authored and sent by Izzi Development Union, Izzi Forum and Izzi Nnodo Youth Forum, against the siting of the Federal College of Education at Isu.

The Chairman of the House Committee on Public Petitions while declaring its decision said:
“The Federal College of Education, Isu has come to stay as the Executive had already exercised its right of choice of location, visited and approved the site and work is already programmed to commence there.

“The petitioners should wait for another opportunity, and lobby when the time comes, as this one is already gone”.

He added: “The members of the National Assembly from the two zones (Ebonyi North and South) should unite as brothers and close ranks and talk to their constituents so that peace and unity can reign”.

Speaking on the decision of the House, the Member representing Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo (OHANIVO) Federal Constituency, Hon. Engr. Livinus Makwe expressed his joy over the ruling, as he thanked his constituents for standing with him in the struggle for the location of the Federal College of Education, which has finally come to stay in Isu.

His words: “I am happy to report to my good people of Ohaozara/Onicha/Ivo Federal Constituency that after making my presentation (after our NASS members representing the petitioners have made theirs), laying the facts bare for all present to see and judge, the Honourable Chairman and members of the Committee saw reason and merit in my presentation and accordingly ruled in favour of the Federal College of Education, Isu remaining at its original location in Isu as already established by the Federal Government.

“I therefore wish to thank the entire people of OHANIVO for their maturity, unity of purpose as well as the support they have continued to give me to succeed. I thank our dear Governor, Engr. Chief David Nweze Umahi, FNSE, FNATE for always being fair to all and for his fatherly love for all Ebonyians in his relentless pursuit of the unity of Ebonyi State and equitable spread of projects and development.

“I commend the Isu elites, the Old Afikpo Union, the entire people of Onicha LGA and particularly the President General, Isuokoma Diaspora Union and the President and members of Isuokoma Town Union, Abuja Branch for their position papers which further helped our case”.

Hon. Makwe further assured the good people of OHANIVO that he would always stand and speak for them in all the matters that concern them, adding that with the help of God, he would fulfil all the promises made to his people.

He said: “I assure our people that I will always stand by them and that my voice will always be heard, loud and clear, firm and unequivocal, when and where it matters.

“With God on our side and with your continued support and prayers we shall surely deliver on all our mandates”.

Prior to the decision of the House Committee, there had been hot reactions from different quarters as regards the choice of Isu in Onicha LGA, as the location of Ebonyi’s own slot of the Federal College of Education.
