“When he (Buhari) took office, we were not happy, but today at the point of departure, things have changed. I can see that the Niger Bridge in Onitsha has been completed. Here in Imo State, a lot has been done for us; in Enugu, it is the same.”

NNAMDI KANU TO REMAIN IN DETENTION TILL SEPTEMBER AS SUPREME COURT ADJOURNS HIS CASE
Kanu And His Lawyers
Otu Obiahu AJM NEWS
The Supreme Court on Thursday adjourned the hearing in the suit filed by the Indigenous People of Biafra for the release of their leader, Nnamdi Kanu, to September 14.
Kanu had approached the court to appeal the verdict of the appeal court stopping his release from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS).
On October 28, 2022, the court of appeal granted a stay of execution on its verdict which discharged Kanu of terrorism charges filed against him by the federal government.
In a unanimous decision by a three-member panel led by Haruna Tsanami, the appeal court granted the application filed by the federal government pending the hearing and determination of the appeal before the supreme court.
Kanu has been in detention since he was brought back from Kenya on June 19, 2021. During Thursday’s proceedings, the apex court granted the application of Abubakar Malami, attorney-general of the federation, to file additional processes in response to Kanu’s filing, which was done on Tuesday.
The apex court said even if it proceeds to hear the appeal, there is no space within its calendar to write and deliver the verdict within the 90-day deadline. The case was therefore adjourned to September 14.
I WAS PERSUADED BY TINUBU TO STEP DOWN FOR AKPABIO, SAYS GOVERNOR UMAHI
Umahi, Tinubu, Akpabio
{…By the efforts some of us made in marketing APC in the South East, we are going to get some other things that are tangible, as we’ve missed the position of the Senate President- UMAHI }
AJM NEWS
The Governor of Ebonyi State, Engr. Dave Umahi has claimed that he stepped down for the former Minister Of Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, in the race for the 10th senate presidency, because he was asked to do so by the President-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday ratified the zoning formula proposed by Tinubu with Akpabio, Tinubu’s favourite for the senate’s top job.
Despite the supposed consensus, some party members rejected the candidacy of the former Akwa Ibom State governor, insisting on the inclusion of other geo-political zones.
But speaking at the newly constructed Mohammadu Buhari International Airport, Onueke, Umahi disclosed he had to accept Tinubu’s request for greater regional unity.
Umahi said: “The leader of the party who is the president-elect called me and I feel it is an honour to have called me and I consulted with him while he was in Paris and he said we were going to talk about it.
“So, when he came back he called me and we had a meeting and he said please I Have committed myself and it is his right to do that, this is the president-elect, 29th May, he is going to be the president of the country so if he had made promises, of course when you are running for such office you must make promises; so I won’t be a clog in the wheel of his progress, so I had to accept.”
The Ebonyi State governor was, however, optimistic that those party faithful will eventually reap the rewards for their loyalty to Tinubu’s administration.
“So, I also accepted for the interest of the South-East, let it not look as if we are in opposition, we just oppose everything. Politics is all about dialogue, it is about give and take, and if we surrendered now or I said No, what will have happened?
“So, I had to in the interest of the South East, so since we didn’t get that one I am sure by God’s special grace the efforts some of us made in marketing APC in the South East, we are going to get some other things that are tangible.”

EBONYI ASSEMBLY APPROVES N1.6 BILLION FOR UMAHI AS ‘EXIT PACKAGE’, FEW DAYS TO UMAHI’S EXIT FROM OFFICE
Gov. Dave Umahi
{…We only approved a fund for an exit package, which is targeted at appreciating those who have worked with the governor. It’s just a welfare package- EBHA }
AJM NEWS
Ebonyi State House of Assembly (EBHA) has approved the sum of N1.6 Billion for Governor Dave Umahi to bankroll exit packages for stakeholders, few days to the expiration of his administration.
It was gathered that the approval of the money was debated upon on the floor of the House by members led by the Deputy Speaker, Kinsley Ikoro, representing Afikpo North West Constituency.
The leader of the State House of Assembly, Victor Chukwu, representing Ezza North West Constituency, who spoke to newsmen shortly after the house sitting, said the approval of the said fund was for the interest of the citizens of the state and not for the governor.
According to him: “We only approved a fund for an exit package, which is targeted at appreciating those who have worked with the governor. It is a welfare package for the citizens of the state.
“It is an extension of the empowerment program that the governor has been doing and there is nothing new about it. The fund wasn’t approved for him as a governor but for the interest of Ebonyi citizens. We only approved one billion, six hundred million,” he stated.
Governor Dave Umahi of Ebonyi State on Tuesday met with President Mohammadu Buhari to apprise him of his decision to vie for the office of the Senate President, saying that not having enough votes from the Southeast is not enough reason for the All Progressives Congress (APC) to deny the region the post.
Speaking to correspondents after the meeting with the President at the Villa, he said allowing the Southeast the chance to produce the next senate president will inspire buy-in from the opposition in the National Assembly. His visit to the President followed similar ones by former Governors Godswill Akpabio (Akwa Ibom) and Abdulaziz Yari (Zamfara) both of whom are also seeking the coveted job in the 10th Senate.
Umahi said: ”I think that every region clamouring for the presidency of the Senate to be zoned to it is the right of such people. If you look at the true reflection of our society, you will agree with me that the right thing to be done by our leaders without prejudice to their rights and thinking is that the South-East deserves the number three position.
“This is very important and I have always said that you can deliver somebody by the reason of the majority votes of particular regions but you also need the cooperation of the minority people to have a holistic nation to govern.
“So, for inclusiveness, unity of the country and for everybody to be carried along, the Southeast deserves the position and so far, nobody has been able to say this is the reason why the South-East should not be given that position and I am pleading for that.”
Governor Umahi noted that the southeast made considerable contributions to the President-elect Bola Tinubu’s victory, as he advised the party not to base its choice solely on vote contributions alone.
Umahi stated: “I know what effort we made as a people for the unity of the country. I know the way we were regarded and we understand that we are stronger while we are together and we made vows to our people while we were campaigning for APC, we assured them that we belong to an equitable and fair Nigeria.
“Now, it has come to a point where that position we took should be put to practice and that is what we are begging for because the chain is as strong as the weakest link and it is time for healing, inclusiveness as well as the time to move this country forward.”

PETER OBI SPEAKS, SLAMS LAI MOHAMMED FOR FALSELY ACCUSING HIM OF STOKING INSURRECTION IN THE COUNTRY
Lai Mohammed And Obi
Otu Obiahu AJM NEWS
The Presidential Candidate of the Labour Party, Mr. Peter Obi has reacted to a recent statement made on Tuesday by the Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed in Washington DC, accusing him (Obi) of inciting people to violence over the outcome of the (controversial) presidential election, saying it is treasonable.
Peter Obi made his views known via his verified Twitter handle. He tweeted::
In the past few days, I have observed various campaigns of calumny directed at my person, with the latest being allegations attributed to the information Minister, Lai Mohammed from Washington DC.
It is most unfortunate that these consistent efforts to portray me quite contrary to what I am, and my core values, is coming from such high quarters. Minister Lai accusing me of stoking insurrection is totally malicious and fictitious.
I have never discussed or encouraged anyone to undermine the Nigerian state; I have never sponsored or preached any action against the Nigerian state.
Those initiating these actions have increasingly used their official positions and agents to make false allegations against me.I am on record as always, advocating for peace and issue-based campaign and never campaigned based on ethnicity or religion.
I am committed to due process, and presently seeking redress in the Court.
I urge those engaged in this demarketing process to stop presenting Nigeria in such bad light. Our future generations deserve a new Nigeria, where they can live a secure and decent life like their counterparts in other climes. It is possible. -PO
ONLY CBN CAN DIRECT US ON OLD NAIRA NOTES, NOT SUPREME COURT— BANKS
CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele
AJM NEWS
Notwithstanding the ruling of the Supreme Court, banks have said they cannot commence re-issuance of the old Naira notes until they are directed to do so by the Central Banks of Nigeria, CBN.
In fact, a banker said the old notes were no longer in their possession, but with CBN and would be available for customers when CBN releases them.
Meanwhile, stakeholders including bank customers, financial analysts and business owners, have called for immediate re-issuance of the old Naira notes in compliance with the Supreme Court.
Some banks’ officials told Vanguard that the banks would comply once they get a directive from CBN.
One of the officials working with Access Bank, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the banks would obey what CBN says, not the Supreme Court.
“Banks in Nigeria are heavily regulated and we only listen to what the CBN says. Despite the (Supreme ruling, we still need to hear from our regulator,” he said.
On whether the apex bank will obey, he said the CBN reports to the President and that the President has decided on the issue.
“We all know what the President has said on the matter. The CBN takes its orders from the Presidency. I am sure any action by CBN would be a directive from the President.”
Another bank official, who works from Keystone Bank said: “We can’t do anything contrary to CBN.
“They will direct what next and probably from Monday we shall get more updates from our management when they meet on Monday.”
‘We don’t have old notes’
But another bank official, who also pleaded to remain anonymous, told Vanguard that in spite of the directive, the old notes have not been made available to the bank.
In his words: “We don’t have the old notes and we are not answerable to the Supreme Court.
“The CBN must send a circular before we can implement any directive.”
Corroborating, another banker stressed that the old Naira notes are no longer in their possession, adding that if the CBN makes it available to banks they will start paying their customers.
However, Olamide, an engineer, said that he has over N200,000 of the old notes and that he has been thinking on how to deposit it to the bank.
In his words: “My business has not been unsteady since the policy. Most banks have refused to pay the new naira notes to Nigerians, they always complain of not having cash in their banks.”
An importer, Lanre said that in the past court orders have not been obeyed and as such, the Supreme Court’s directive may not be implemented.
According to him, “Initially, when the Supreme Court issued the order and the President of the country issued a counter directive by saying that the old N200 should continue to be in circulation, it appeared that the public chose to go with the directive from the President, instead of the Supreme Court.
“In this situation, there are two sides giving counter orders — the President and the Supreme Court. Now, the Supreme Court has gone ahead to say that those currencies should be valid till 31st of December.
“The only way the average market woman, the artisans and the transporters will feel comfortable and accept it is if it’s being backed up by the President.”
